With the advent of the digital photographic age it seems that we as photographers are trying to speed everything up. While aspects of photography like post processing, workflow, and frames per second certainly have benefits for speed there is one aspect that doesn’t. I am talking about the time it takes to create or make an image. When photographing with slide film we generally took a bit more time because each frame cost money. Not only did it cost to buy the film in the first place but it cost more in most cases to have it developed, especially if you used a professional lab. To really improve we also had to take notes for given situations and try to match them up when we received our images back after a couple weeks. It was a painful process. However, in that process we became masters of our work. We took extra time to see the tonality of the image and to ensure that everything was perfect before we clicked the button. “Fix it in Photoshop” wasn’t an option. If we didn’t get it right we wasted money and the shot was lost.<br />
<br />
<br />
I have been guilty of moving too fast and rushing through a session or an outing. It is very easy to get in the habit of taking several shots to get it all set rather than setting it all and taking a shot. It seems that we as photographers are often under pressure, actual or perceived, to give a client hundreds of images (or even thousands for weddings) rather than a handful of great images. By doing that I am not certain that we are providing the quality service that we could. Besides, if you take the time to get it right then you can move on to other scenes or compositions. Being deliberate with your photography also helps speed up your workflow and post processing because there is less editing involved. <br />
<br />
Sure, at a wedding you may have to move a little faster and take a few more images but that was the case back in the film days too. A wedding day is full of things needing photographed and you are on a time table! Perhaps you are a child photographer and you have to take several shots to get the expression you want. That too is fine and if you have taken the time to get everything set then when that expression shows itself you can easily get the shot. Don’t spray and then pray you got the shot. Know that you got it and move on.<br />
<br />
This blog post is as much for me as it is for you and here is my final advice. Slow down and be deliberate. I’ll bet your images improve right away if you take the time to make them.Jason L. This will help you get a better idea of the books content as well as teach you a little about the Aperture and how it is used. If you know of anyone into photography please share this post. I believe that the book can help those just getting started as well as reinforce the basics for those who have been doing this for awhile. You can find out more about the book here: </span><br />

<br />
<strong>What is the Aperture?</strong><br />
<br />
<div>
Aperture in its basic definition is a hole in which light travels through. This opening is increased or decreased using a series of blades within the lens of a DSLR. The number that is used to indicate the size of the opening is called an f-stop. The f-stop number is determined by dividing the focal length of the lens by the diameter of the pupil (or opening). Luckily in the camera world we just have to pay attention to the numbers after the “f” to know the f-stop. Smart people somewhere already did the math. </div>
<div>
</div>
<strong>How the Aperture is Used?</strong><br />
<div>
</div>
The aperture is used when determining proper exposure. If you think of the aperture as a faucet and light as water it might be easier to understand. If you turn a faucet on full blast it is letting a large amount of water flow. That would be the equivalent of a wide open aperture i.e. f2.8. If you turn the water on just slightly where there is only a trickle then you have a small aperture i.e. f22.<br />
<div>
</div>
Not only is aperture used to help determine proper exposure but it is used to determine depth of field. <br />
<div>
</div>
<strong>• Depth of Field (DOF)</strong><br />
<div>
</div>
<ul>
<li>DOF is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a photograph that appear reasonably sharp. Think of this area as the focal plane as well. Lenses can precisely focus on a given point. However, anything closer or further away from that point begins to leave the focal plane. This is how you get the nice blurry backgrounds you see in some photographs or the tack sharpness in others.</li>
<li>The smaller the opening (higher the f-stop number) the greater depth of field. Think of it like squinting your eyes.</li>
<li>The larger the opening (smaller the f-stop number) the shallower the depth of field.</li>
</ul>
<div>
</div>
<div>
•Aperture is one of the most powerful tools in a photographer’s arsenal to creating compelling images. It vital to your photography that you fully understand what changing aperture numbers will do to your photograph.</div>
<div>
</div>

Below is a list of typical f-stops you typically see on modern lenses and a graphical representation of what happens to the depth of field as the f-stop number changes. I highly recommend that you memorize these apertures as it will help you later when you are determining manual exposures and depth of field. </div>

How they fly, how fast they move, and the men and women who fly them. See, I have been a pilot since 1994. I don't fly that much any more but I certainly never pass up the opportunity to photograph them. Today, I headed out to the Wings over Homestead air show at the Homestead Air Force Base. This is a show that comes every year or two and it is always entertaining. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">While it might not be a Sun-N-Fun or an Oshkosh it is a fun place to be when the jets rocket down the runway. I would like to take this time to thank all those involved in bringing us this free air show. More than that though I would like to thank the men and women of the armed forces for their efforts each and every day.</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">A photograph is a moment captured; an interpretation of life. Time passes and memories begin to fade. If you have been lucky enough to have photographs of those moments then by simply looking you are transported back to those memories; no longer are they fading, no longer forgotten. It is for this reason that I pick up my camera.</span><br />

Below you will see two photographs taken just a few minutes apart. You can see in the first one that the sun hasn't risen to the point that direct light is hitting the buildings. It is however strangely iluminating the clouds just above them. <br />
<br />
A short time later the second shot was taken. It is easy to tell that it is just after the sun has fully risen as the light is directly reflected in the clouds, the buildings and the water. Always remember, at sunset and sunrise if you don't like the light just wait a few minutes.<br />
<br />
These two images are distinctly different and each one works depending on what you like.<br />

Several months ago I had an idea. The idea was based on my own struggles with exposure when I was starting out in photography. This e-book book has been designed to give you a solid foundation regarding exposure as you continue to build your own photographic skills. <br />

Here are a few of my favorite engagement photos from yesterday's (10/06/2012) shoot. There is a little pull off as you are headed to Key Biscayne where these were taken. It is one of my favorite locations for engagement photos. <br />
<br />
However, taking a couple there on a Saturday afternoon poses some interesting problems. Until now I had only visited there early in the mornings and typically we were the only ones there and had the run of the place. Saturday afternoons on the other hand are crawling with people and not the quiet contemplative ones either. But with a little effort and the willingness of these folks to walk around the photos came out just fine. <br />
<br />

The moral of the story is know your location if at all possible prior to the shoot. I did show up about 30min before and took a quick note of what we had to work with. If I hadn't done that it certainly would have been a little more challenging.<br />
<br />
Of course having folks like this makes it all the easier!<br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Nikon announced the D600 full frame camera a couple of weeks back. This is not a review of this camera because, well, I haven’t even held one. This is an informative post. The D600 seems to be a bit of a new direction for Nikon. It is a more economical way to break into a full frame camera coming in at $2,100.00. The next closest product with similar features is the D800 which costs $3000.00. You could buy a decent lens for that price difference.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Anyway, this is something to consider if you are looking for a new camera and this is within your budget.</div>

Here are the basic specs on the D600 and they do look rather impressive given the price point and that it is a full frame camera.</div>

Even though I spend a good bit of time and effort photographing beautiful places I rarely ever see it in print. Most often it sets on my hard drive at home with the occasional one making it to my website or blog. My wife and I do not have a shoebox full of images and I know in my gut that we will one day regret that.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
There are many images that we have printed but they are still in their cardboard box waiting on a frame. Twenty years ago we would have had albums to flip through or walls full of family images. What has changed? Has technology stolen the nostalgia of print? Often times I feel vain to hang my own work on our walls. The wife says I'm just crazy (that may be true too). </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Each time I hold a print the image seems more real. The larger the print the more value it has in my minds eye. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
This brings me to the questions I have for you. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Is the photographic print dead? If so, why do you think that is the case? </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><span style="font-size: large;"><br /> </span></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-size: large;">When you hold a print in your hands or see it on a wall does it feel different than viewing it on your computer?</span></div>

I grabbed the family and some photo gear, got in the truck, and off we went. We arrived at the fist destination just prior to sunset… the perfect time. We doused ourselves with a heavy dose of bug spray and I started setting up the gear. Within a few minutes we all realized that the bugs seemed to be more attracted to the spray than repelled and my family ended up back in the truck with the AC going. I stayed out and battled the little critters for a few shots. Nature was not cooperating.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
I decided that since not everything was coming together I would still make the best of the situation. I worked on composition and I worked on exposure technique. This is something you can do regardless of what the world around you is doing (or not doing in this case). Each of these is the first image in a given composition and I used the Zone System to ensure that the tonality of the photograph was exactly where I wanted it to be. I didn’t "chimp" to find the proper exposure. I used the spot meter on the camera which was set to manual mode to target a specific part of the image. Then, setting the exposure to the tonality desired I clicked the shutter. Nature (or people) will not always be at their best. They will both have their good days and their bad days but that should not stop you from becoming a better photographer. Sure, I have better images out there but given the situation… They aren’t bad at all and on top of that it was fun! </div>

<br />
With the cost of Lightroom 4 being dropped to 149.00 there have been a lot of people giving it a go. One of the most often misunderstood aspects of Lightroom with new users is how Lightroom manages your photos. Well, here is the truth. It doesn’t… However, Lightroom does have tools that allow you to better manage your photo files. Lightroom doesn’t care where your photos are located so you can copy them from your memory card to your hard drive in a specific location before importing into Lightroom or you can leave them on the card and ask Lightroom to do it for you.<br />
<br />
<br />
If you are in the Library Module on the bottom left side of the screen you will see the “Import” button. Push that. The Lightroom dialogue box will appear.<br />
<br />
There are really only three aspects to this box. <br />
<br />
1. Where From: The left hand side deals with where the files are currently located.<br />
<br />
2. How you want Lightroom to handle the photos: This portion is in the middle of the dialogue box at the top of the screen. This is where many folks get a bit confused about what it is Lightroom is really doing. You have three options to choose from. Copy, Move, and Add. Let’s take a closer look.<br />
<br />
<br />
Copy<br />
<br />
• This is the option that I use 99% of the time. This is where you point Lightroom to a specific folder and/or memory card and tell it to copy the files in that location and paste them into a new location. The new location you choose with aspect three listed in the next section. I use this one over the Move choice simply because I like to ensure I have all the images in my backup locations prior to deleting them off the card.<br />
<br />
<br />
Move<br />
<br />
• The Move option does exactly what it says it does. It moves the files from their current location to the location that you have specified. (see the third aspect) <br />
<br />
<br />
Add<br />
<br />
• Add is the one that gives people the most trouble. This is because when you ADD photos all you are doing is bringing in the photos to the Lightroom Catalog. The images remain exactly where they were. This means if you moved your images to a folder on your desktop and you “ADD” them to the Lightroom catalog the files do not get moved or copied. This also means that if you move or delete the desktop folder and you do not tell Lightroom then it doesn’t understand where they all went. If you remove the original location and you open up lightroom you will see the thumbnails that it created when you imported the image. However, you will see writing across the image that says it cannot find the source file. Now, provided you have not deleted the originals there are ways to tell Lightroom where to look. <br />
<br />
3. Where to put them: If you have chosen Copy or Move then you have the option of telling Lightroom where you want the files to be copied or moved to.<br />
<br />

However, with posts like this one from Bill Fortney how can I not? If you read one photographic blog this year, click on the link below and read.<br />

Recently, I have gone through a low point in photographic inspiration. Yes, I admit it openly. I have reached out to professionals who's work I admire for advice. There answer is almost always the same and it involves one recurring word. "Work"... We have to work to be inspired. We have to work to get better. We have to get out and shoot and we need to shoot what we love! <br />
<br />
Mr. Fortney has put it plain and simple on his recent blog post and this may be one of the best photographic blogs ever written.<br />
<br />
Mr. Fortney, I know you don't read my blog but I would like to extend a thank you for your words, your devotion (to photography and to Christ), and your photographic work. You are truely and inspiration!Jason L. The above link takes you to a guest post on Scott Kelby's Blog. It is a post written by one of my favorite photographers of all time. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Bill at the PPA Imaging USA in New Orleans this past Janurary. I would like to say that I had a great and powerful converstaion with Mr Fortney but I just stood there and gawked like a star struck school boy. I did managed to get up the courage to introduce myself and shake his hand.<br />
<br />
Mr. Fortney is simply one of the best photographers of all time. You can check out his work here: <a href="http://www.billfortney.com/">http://www.billfortney.com</a>. Make sure to look at his landscape galleries. They are incredibly inspiring and they remind me that I have much more to learn.<br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Many of you know that the software we use to process our images gets updated every couple of years. Not to mention new software seems to come out all the time. Not only does the software change but your vision as an artists changes with time as well. Have you considered going back to photographs you have taken in the past and “re-editing” them based on software and/or vision changes? </div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Recently I took another look of a Great Smoky Mountain shoot I did from 2010. There were as many as 6 images that previously had not seen the light of day. It isn’t that they were bad but rather I had not realized the potential of the images. Since 2010 I have gotten the Nik Software Suite which gives some tremendous options. Silver efex Pro II for example allows you to easily and effectively convert images to black and white. Not to mention the Lightroom update with Lightroom 4. The highlights slider alone in that update makes taking a look at past images a must. Don’t forget about the Photoshop update to CS6 either. All of these are tools that can help you realize the potential of past images. </div>

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Your ability to see the images differenly can change as well. For me I know that I view tonality and image contrast much different than I did even last year. The changing of software, hardware, and artistic vision make it worth the time to revisit your past archives.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Warning: While you might want to spend some time looking at your past images do not dwell there. The only way to truly improve is to get out and shoot.</div>

Okay, I have come across a video series worth the price of admission. While this is centered a great deal around outdoor photography it teaches aspects of Exposure that most never fully grasp. Ever wondered what the Zone System (created by Ansel Adams) really is? Well, Gavin Seim teaches that system to you (among other things) in his new video. <br />
<br />
I can dig his style too. He is... well, quirky and fun!<br />

Check it out!<br />

Have you seen those really odd photos where it looks like the picture was taken of a miniature city model. Well if you check out the video I explain how to quickly get that look using the Photoshop CS6 Tilt-Shift filter.<br />
<br />
I mention this in the video put it is important enough to reinforce here. To make this work you need to be at a higher vantage point than your subject. I have not seen an instance where this works at eye level. I hope you enjoy this very short video.<br />

I would guess if you are a new photographer this is where you are there right now. Insecure with your work. Do you take an image and then let it set on your computer because it doesn't live up to the level of a Rick Sammon or a Joe McNally? (if you don't know who they are look them up) Here is the deal... Not everyone is a Rick Sammon or a Joe McNally... at least not yet. In order to get better you have to not only take photos but receive honest feedback from your friends, family, and other photographers. Seek out unbiased professional feedback. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Should you copy everything you see? No, but knowing how it was done can certainly help you in your own photography. </div>

<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
The point is we should not let our own insecurities stop us from picking up the camera. You're not a Joe McNally but if you leave your camera in the bag you never will be.</div>Jason L. Eldridgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09903645544650484325noreply@blogger.com2
